Winters Best Buys ~ Winter 2018

Well it’s officially Winter! I know I have readers from all over the country, whose wardrobe needs differ from season to season, but a good coat (or at least a jacket) is a must in most people’s wardrobes. After all, most of us travel from time to time, often to cooler climates.

I know I wrote a similar post last year, but you loved it. And love it when I walk into stores and the sales staff say, “hey such-and-such bought this jacket yesterday because she read about it on your blog!”

Here are my tips on the best buys for winter coats this season. Coats that will have longevity in your wardrobe, classic styles that you’ll wear for years to come, and a few what the hell, life’s too short to wear boring clothes options!

The Seasonal Fave ~ Marcs Rose Felted Wool $360

This is one of our absolute faves, and if you’ve shopped with us in winter you may well own this coat. The Marcs Winter signature coat is sleek and timeless coat cut from luxe felted wool. Designed in a flattering A-line fit with gunmetal-tone hardware, the coat comes in a longline and a crop. I prefer the longer Rose version for a true coat, but the cropped version is just as flattering.

Perfect for: petites, pear shapes

The Classic ~ Sportscraft Grace Zip Coat $400

Made from a super soft wool rich blend, this coat features an asymmetric two-way zip closure, front slant pockets and a modern midi-length design making it extremely flattering on the body. It looks stunning zipped up but also has enough shape that it’s also super flattering worn undone. This is the essential classic black winter coat.

Perfect for: the classic corporate woman

The Pea Coat ~ Trenery Merino Blend Pea Coat $399

Trenery’s essential classic peacoat is tailored from an Italian compact merino wool blend fabric, that is cosy yet structured and features flattering vertical seams and welt pockets. The boxy fit makes it the perfect finishing layer for work to weekend and the stunning forest green works well with black, navy and denim.

Perfect for: a casual weekend look with jeans and sneakers

The ‘on trend’ ~ Forever New Stella Check Coat $190

Plaid is HUGE this season and this is a great entry-level coat if you want to get the look without blowing your budget. This grey double-breasted check coat is made from a luxurious wool blend for superior comfort and warmth. Layer yours over a knit jumper, skinny jeans and ankle boots for a covetable cool weather look, or with a white tee, leather pants and kicks. It’s not just the check I love, the shape is really great too. Classic and timeless, checks really never go out of fashion so this will be a wardrobe keeper.

Perfect for: trying a trend without breaking the bank

The Shearling ~ Zara Shearling Reversible Coat $219

Two coats for the price of one, who doesn’t love that! This knee length reversible coat with large lapels, side pockets and faux fur interior is the ultimate versatile piece. Shearling is another trend this season, so wear it one way for a relaxed, casual look and the other for a more timeless style.

Perfect for: trying something different

MAKE A STATEMENT

The Colour Pop ~ Portmans Riya longline coat $230

Stand out against grey winter skies in the vibrant red Riya Longline Coat from Portmans. Cut from heavy wool in a classic double-breasted design, it features statement buttons and an oversized shawl collar that takes a timeless winter weather staple to the next level.

Perfect for: adding a pop of colour to your wardrobe

The Faux Fur ~ Zara Faux Fur Leopard Coat $219

In a sea of black coats it’s nice to see some pattern! If you don’t mind a pop of leopard, this fun coat from Zara is a great one. Coats are all about adding that final layer for warmth, so why not add something that makes you smile too. Don’t worry too much about matching your prints, go all out and mix it up!

Perfect for: standing out from the crowd

INVESTMENT

Viktoria and Woods Portofino Coat $750

The Portofino Coat is beautifully tailored from a wool blend, custom dyed in Italy and available in both black and Grenadine (pictured) Fully lined, the relaxed silhouette and irregular lapels create a stylish alternative to your classic coat. And the added bonus, made in Australia!

Perfect for: those looking to support locally made fashion

Camilla and Marc Ira Coat $999 **THIS COAT HAS SINCE SOLD OUT!**

I’ve saved the best til last (and most expensive) but if you’re going to splurge on a coat that is a true investment, this is it. Timeless in cut, classic in colour, this is the type of coat you could pass down the family tree. Camel is a great winter colour and the perfect neutral to compliment any other colour in your wardrobe. Team with other neutrals like chocolate brown and cream for a truly stylish look.

Perfect for: the wardrobe that doesn’t need lots of coats, but one good one
