Trends to buy NOW!

I’m the first to admit, it’s a very tempting time when the new trends start filtering into the stores. Perhaps it’s something completely new, a trend you’ve seen your favourite overseas bloggers wearing or an old wardrobe favourite with an updated feel.

Whatever the case, when should you start buying your wardrobe for the new season? For most people, trends are not important. For most of our clients, what’s more important is having quality pieces that all mix and match to create a seamless seasonal wardrobe. And better still, pieces that will transfer between the seasons.

I’m going to share my top 5 Winter trends that are worth looking to BUY NOW. They’re not going to be for everyone. Some you’ll like, others you’ll say pass. And regardless of my advice on the trend, remember you have to LOVE it to buy it.

CHECK BLAZERS

Checks are back. Big time. One of my favourite pieces is the checked blazer. Alas I have already made a new season purchase (you’ll see it on Instagram soon)

Why not mix up your corporate style with a check blazer or trousers (or both?)

*STYLE TIP: just like wearing similar colours head to toe, doing the same with a pattern will also create the illusion of length and is very slimming.

PLEATED SKIRTS

They were around over spring summer and they’re hanging around for winter. Soft and feminine in look and feel, you can toughen up with a biker jacket and boots or keep it girly with simple pumps and a blouse.

*STYLE TIP: naturally there’s lots of volume in pleats so the idea is to always create balance. Wearing a top tucked in will draw the eye upwards, making you look taller and provide balance with the width of the skirt. The bottom look (grey knit over pink skirt) whilst pretty cool is a very tricky style to pull off unless you’re quite tall.

FISHNETS

But not as you know them. I started noticing this trend on Instagram in 2016 and now I’m obsessed. The idea is to wear them either as socks or full stockings under jeans and trousers.

*STYLE TIP: there’s a fine line between fishnets looking cool and looking- well you know, a bit tarty.

LONG COATS

The longer the better. Knee length? Too short.

I can’t get enough of this look. Coats are always in fashion, and who doesn’t love snuggling in to a warm, cosy coat in winter. But this season they’re a little more extreme with lengths heading way south.

It doesn’t really matter what style or colour (pea coat, double breasted, trench, Empire line) as long as its long.

*STYLE TIP: petite women under 5’5″ always wear a long coat unbuttoned. A buttoned up coat of this length will swamp you, making you look shorter.

VELVET

A timeless fabric gets a new fresh look this season. Most of us think of velvet as a luxurious, evening appropriate fabric, but it’s actually perfect for any time of the day.

*STYLE TIP: embrace the beautiful jewel tones of emerald, cobalt, turquoise, burgundy and navy. Pair simply with your favourite jeans and a white tee for a casual look, or glam up a velvet skirt or wide leg trouser with a classic crisp white shirt for evening.

Not sure about velvet? (don’t worry, I’m not either!) Velvet shoes are the perfect way to dip your toes into the trend.
