Six winter fashion trends you need to know in 2022

We all know trends come and go, and many come full circle! This Winter is no different. If you’re looking to update your winter wardrobe with only a few key pieces or new silhouettes, the below ideas will ensure you step out in the cold, in style.

1. Oversized Outerwear

From trench coats to puffers and blazers, there is one thing abundantly clear: oversized silhouettes are most definitely in.

From international runways to local designers and street style punters alike, all have embraced the comfortable, slouchy up-sizing à la The Frankie Shop and Camilla and Marc, as pictured below. Whether it’s a boxy, oversized blazer with exaggerated shoulders, a roomy below the knee cocoon coat or a streetwear inspired larger than life bomber jacket, this is one trend that you can literally throw over the rest of your wardrobe.

The key to pulling off this style is to SIZE UP! The bigger, the better.

2. Tonal Dressing

Tonal dressing has gone to the next level. It’s about selecting one colour and building your entire outfit around it, playing around with texture and fabrics to ensure each piece stands out from the other. Matching your accessories is even more commitment to the trend!

You can interpret this trend in whatever colour you choose – personally I’m all about the neutrals – black, grey, taupe and camel. Below are some images for inspiration including our very own stylist Loré in tonal navy/indigo denim.

3. Chunky Knitwear

It might seem an obvious choice for winter, but a cosy, oversized knit is still a key trend for Winter 22. The best thing about a statement jumper is that it’s a stand alone piece – you really don’t need to do anything else other than throw it on with your favourite jeans, a midi skirt or even throw over a maxi dress. Add some boots and you’ve got a great winter outfit.

Personally I love a turtleneck but below are some options for those who don’t like too much fuss around their neck.

Commonry V Neck Alpaca Knit

Skin and Threads Batwing Knit

4. Leather

We’ve probably all owned a leather jacket (and likely still do) but leather apparel has increased in variety over the years, as has the ‘type’ of leather available. Whether you prefer genuine leather or the faux type, there really is something for everyone in 2022.

Leather is a great way to inject a point of interest – it’s smooth texture mixes beautifully back with your knits, silks and cottons. It’s also a very transeasonal fabric. Perhaps consider a leather pant, shirt or skirt for your winter wardrobe?

5. Chunky Boots

If there’s one shoe trend that’s still going strong it’s the chunky boot. If you still have your old Doc Marten’s hiding in the back of the wardrobe it’s time to dust them off! Or, you can add a new boot style to your winter wardrobe for a fresh, modern look.

Black boots might seem the go-to colour, but below are some non-black options that might just give your winter style the update it needs.

Witchery Cream Leather Boots

Tony Bianco Vanilla Boots

Le Babe Olive Boots from 124 Shoes

Merry People x Karen Walker Gumboot

Senso Black Boots

Radical Yes Boots

6. Chocolate Brown

Do yourselves a favour and add some CHOCOLATE to your wardrobes this winter! I absolutely adore chocolate brown and cannot wait for Melbourne’s temperature to finally drop so I can layer myself up like a box of chocolates!

Toteme Monogram Wool Scarf  (this is what I’m waiting to wear this winter!)
