Q&A with Melbourne stylist Juvelle Behrendorff - Styled By Sally

Q&A with stylist Juvelle Behredorff

Q: When did you first develop an interest in style and fashion?

When I was small my favourite part of playing Barbies was dressing them in new and different outfits. Later in life this love of fashion, turned toward creating outfits and exploring new styles for myself, and while not every outfit was a success I loved the sense of freedom and play that came with being able to express myself through clothing.

Q: Tell us a little about your professional background and experience

I originally began a career in Sports Science where I worked closely with youth and female athletes helping them perform at their best. While I found the work rewarding, I realised my true passion lay elsewhere. Inspired by my long love of fashion, I pursued a career in personal styling, a path that allowed me to combine creativity with my deep understanding of the human body and movement. My background in sports science gives me a unique perspective as a stylist. I understand how clothing should fit, compliment and move with different body shapes and sizes, allowing me to create looks that not only feel stylish, but effortless and authentic to each individual. For the past 10 years I have worked with both women and men across a wide range of ages, styles, and backgrounds. My work has included styling for seasonal wardrobe updates, special events, red carpets, book covers and professional photoshoots, and I have even been lucky to style a few celebrities and personalities over the years. From curating elevated everyday wardrobes to styling clients for major occasions, I love to make each experience personalised and thoughtful.

Q: Favourite holiday destination?

Italy

Q: Any fashion regrets or faux pars?

During my teens I was exploring my own sense of style and used to dress for every trend without considering whether I liked the trend or not. It was a great way to discover and hone my own style but it has definitely meant there are a few interesting photos lying around.

Q: Describe your personal style

 Classic, effortlessly chic, feminine tomboy

Q: What are your favourite wardrobe items?

A mens oversized blazer, classic blue wash straight leg denim jeans, my burgundy vintage suede jacket and point toe kitten heels.

Q: What’s your most recent purchase?

I recently just added to my winter wardrobe which included a tailored maxi length wool coat.

Q: Favourite designers or stores?

I love discovering and supporting independent Australian designers. Other designers I love are Camilla and Marc, Frankie Shop, JW Anderson, Tory Burch, Dries Van Noten, Jacquemus and Victoria Beckham.

Q: What wardrobe staple could you not do without?

A good fitting and well cut blazer, it makes any outfit look more elevated and stylish.

Q: When you shop for yourself, what’s your decision making on a purchase?

If it’s not an absolute yes then it’s a no. Do I feel good in it? And I always consider how many ways I can style the new purchase with what I already own in my wardrobe, if I can’t make at least 4 outfits then the purchase is rarely worth the investment.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working with clients?

I love that moment in a session when a client looks in the mirror and you can tell that they feel great in what they are wearing and love what they see. There is real power in finding a style that is authentic to you and how feeling and looking your best can boost your confidence.

Q: What do you love doing on your days off?

I have two young boys so I love to spend time with them at their sports games or playing at home together.

Q: What are your top styling tips for women or men?

Style is personal, it’s different for everyone so wear what you personally love and invest in the best quality you can afford.

Q: Minimalist or hoarder?

I hate to say it, but I am more hoarder than minimalist but every piece is considered so could I say curator instead?

Q: Chocolate or cheese?

 Cheese

Q: Favourite Movie?

I don’t know if I have a favourite but I always come back to easy to watch movies like The Devil Wears Prada.

Q: What Sex and the City character most resembles your personality?

I don’t think personality wise I am much like any of them but I would love to raid Samantha’s wardrobe for those tailored jackets.

Q: What’s the biggest mistake you see clients make with their personal style?

They dress for someone else, whether it’s their past self or someone else’s perception of how they should dress.

Q: Describe your personality in 3 words

Nurturing, affable, adaptable

Q: Do you have any style icons?

Tracee Ellis Ross, Solange Knowles, Dianne Keaton and Victoria Beckham. I also draw a lot of inspiration from brands like Ralph Lauren and how they layer clothes.
