5 Tips on How to Organise Your Wardrobe

Wardrobe Overhaul

Have you ever struggled finding a shirt, tie or belt from what seems to be a big, messy pile of clutter you call your closet? If you answered yes, then it’s high time you start organising.

Why organise your closet? Apart from giving you the ease of getting ready every morning, a well-kept and organised wardrobe helps in keeping your clothes last longer. After all, your clothes are an investment. Treat them well and they can serve you from one season to the next. Here are some tips on how you can organise your closet.

Organise by category, then by colour

Separate business from casual clothes, or bottoms from tops. For example, hang all your trousers together next to jeans, next to business shirts, next to casual shirts, and so on. If possible, leave enough space between each section so you can clearly tell where your work clothes end and your casual wear begins.

After you have organised by category, you can then organise by colour. Start with the lightest shades and then progress to the darker colours. Colour coordinating your garments makes putting together an outfit to wear quick and easy.

Hang your clothes properly

Hanging your clothes properly using appropriate hangers not only keeps your wardrobe organised, but also helps in taking care of your garments. For dress shirts, you may either use hangers made of wood or with plush arms as these can help retain the shirt’s shape. Make sure you button the top two buttons of each shirt when hanging them.

For jackets, suit coats or blazers, use sturdy U-shaped hangers with rounded sides to preserve the shape on the shoulders. These larger hangers create some space between the suits, allowing for more air circulation which helps in preserving the garments.

For trousers, you can hang them from the waistband using single or double clamp hangers. This keeps them free of wrinkles and allows them to air out.

Organise your accessories

Use a door- or wall-mounted accessory rack for your belts and ties. A rack helps your belts and ties maintain their shape better than just stuffing them in a drawer. For hats and other miscellaneous items, install hooks on an empty closet wall or on the back of your closet door to hang them. Keep socks and underwear in drawers. One drawer should be dedicated to socks and another drawer only for underwear.

Don’t leave dirty clothes laying around

Toss dirty clothes immediately in a hamper, to prevent accumulating a pile of them on the floor. If possible, use a laundry sorter or a hamper with three slots: one slot for light coloured clothes, another slot bag for dark coloured clothes, and a third slot for dry cleaning.

Get rid of clothes you are no longer wearing

Is there any piece of clothing you haven’t worn for a year? Chances are you won’t wear it again. Donate it. This clears up some more space on your closet for clothes that you actually are wearing.

Follow these simple tips and you’ll find that organizing your wardrobe can be a breeze. And once you see how tidier everything looks and how easy dressing up can be, you’ll be thankful you did it!
