Men’s sneakers: how to wear the trend without looking like Seinfeld

Sneakers are not just for athletes or gym-goers anymore. Today, they’ve become a wardrobe staple and a fashion statement. But you have to be able to dress it in a modern, classy and fun way or else run the risk of looking like Jerry Seinfeld.

Here are some sneaker types that I really love and some tips on how you can wear it with style.

Basic sneakers – These are your Converse or Vans. They are usually made in canvas or leather and come in basic colours with white being most popular.

Basic sneakers are the most versatile and affordable pair you can own. You can mix them with relaxed, slim denims or chinos of different colours and shades. For tops, printed t-shirts, gingham shirts or a sporty blazer work well for a more polished look. The basic sneaker is best worn for casual occasions.

Sport sneakers – These are your Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Puma and other brands you usually use to play sports.

Best to keep this look sporty! Pair your sport sneakers with slim and tapered-fit denims, a bit of a loose t-shirt (not too tight and not too loose either!) and casual jackets. During summer, you can wear them with chinos too. Don’t wear your sporty sneaks with loose fitting denim because it never works, trust me!

High-fashion designer sneakers – Loud and designed to be noticed, these are sneakers by brands like Givenchy, Christian Louboutin, Maison Martin Margiela, Diemme and Giuseppe Zanotti.

Think Kanye West. Pair your high-fashion sneaks with slim denim that’s gathered at the bottom, t-shirts and open plaid shirts. You can also try to dress them up with a draped blazer over a singlet. It would be best to stick to blacks, whites and mute colours to balance the loudness of the sneakers.

The simplest way to look your best.
